Understanding Chuckwagon and the "quote box"
Posted: Wed Jan 25, 2012 09:24
Hey Smoke Addicts and Sausage Stuffers! Chuckwagon here....
Please trust me, I`m not tryin` to be ornery and picky! And I`m not cranky by nature either! (Just double ugly and my banjo playin` is just awful!). We`ve got a little problem and I`m quite sure you`ll see my point.
Part of the regulations on other sites include the overuse of the "Quote Box". We`ve never had to mention it here until now. You know... it`s where you highlight and copy, then paste and "quote" the previous post. In about 90% of all replys, it just is NOT necessary to "quote" the previous post. Just simply go ahead and answer the last post. Think about it and I think you`ll agree... why post the question all over again? It just isn`t necessary. So far, we haven`t had to remind anyone. But lately, we`re just seeing a lot of unnecessary use of "quotes".
Heck pards, if possible, just answer another members post with a new post of your own. This saves so much "verbage" you really wouldn`t believe it.
I was recently reminded to "do my job and clean it up"... so I`m tranquilly tryin` to do just that. (Hey, I went to "moderator school"!) I enjoy it actually - especially the big bucks! My day usually begins early... writing newspaper columns and manuscripts. About noon on the forum, I begin to field questions and answer them until about 8 PM daily. This includes answering emails, PM`s, and even phone calls. Then after that, I enjoy welcoming new members with three different formats, including lengthy posts showing them their way around our forum.
Again, please don`t get me wrong. I love the work. Sometimes I can`t remember who has more experience than others, so please don`t ever think I`m ever "talking down" to anyone with a particular answer. I love beginners. They are the best. Sometimes, it takes so very much effort just for novices to come forward and post a plea for help. (Do you remember when you first started?) Lots of folks need a "helpin` hand" and I believe we`re negligent if we do not respond to all beginners` requests - in FULL. Are we so shallow that we can`t remember when WE were just "raw sausage" with no experience? Please, lets encourage beginners to do their best by providing as much information as possible to ensure their continuance.
Next, I have to battle those "cyber terrorists" that always seem to pledge themselves to tearing down that which is essentially a pretty good thing... like Wedliny Domowe. These guys have no sense of humor and somehow take it upon themselves to undermine us at every opportunity. Each day, I spend much time in defending our values and our very right to exist on the net. I have to do it with WORDS in these modern days. Twenty years ago, I`d have just whipped their butts with a stick!
So, please help me out. Keep it clean and short (without "unnecessary quotes" if possible. This surely doesn`t mean all quotes.... Just the unnecessary ones! Often it is necessary to quote just part of a phrase to express your answer to a specific question or passage. By all means, use the quotes in that situation. That`s what they are for! I`m just asking you to stop and think about it before you hit the "send" button.
No, I`m not getting` ornery in my old age... I`m trying to keep the administrator happy. We all have rules to abide by. No profanity PLEASE. I have to delete any swear words. But then, I like to get your permission first, so it creates more paperwork on my part. Why not just keep it clean in the first place?
I truly love the folks on this forum. That`s why I spend my retirement hours each day in moderating this forum. It is not an easy job. It actually involves quite a bit of time. So, please help me out. I appreciate it very much. And I appreciate all of you. After all, you are the best folks in the world - those who make smoked sausage. How in the world would anyone find a better group of people?
Thanks Everyone... and of course...
My Best Wishes,
Chuckwagon
