Had a great walk today

I live in Christchurch, New Zealand. It has a population of over three hundred thousand. Today I went on a walk to a place called Boulder Bay. The start of the walk is about 15 mins from the city center. The return walk is about an hour and a half. I did it today with a friend of mine. We did a lot of poking about and it took us three hours. I should have taken my surf caster.

The houses are called batches or cribbs (if you are from further south). They have no legal right to be there. In the early 1900's locals just built them. They either carried the materials there or took them by boat. They all have remainend in local hands. They are holiday or weekend homes. Despite the lines there is no power or phones. The issue of the batches is a real political battle. The local Government and the Department of Conservation wants to remove them, but there is a lot of local opposition to and against them. With the earthquake I think that it will be a good while before the issue comes up again.

Oh-yes the winch still works

Nice pictures Mark. They bring back memories of when we were in NZ. In 2006 we flew into Christchurch, then drove to the Kaikoura area where we hiked for four days, staying at a different farm each night. It was a great experience!
