Netted casings

Hi,
Are there any casing suppliers that sell Netted casings such as www.hukki.com
I like to try the honeycomb pattern and the netted fibrous casings in various sizes.
There is a supplier in Australia but unless I buy a pallet load they don't even want to talk to me. Miserable pack of mongrels!!!!!!!!!

Hi Jan! I clicked on your link and really liked the appearance of what the honeycomb casing gave the finished product. I searched the net and everything I ran into in regards to honeycomb casings brought me back to the Hukki site you posted. Maybe there's a few other sausage makers down under who'd be willing to go in a pallet full of casings, they sure give a sausage a high-dollar and unique look. RAY

Seeing as how Hukki products are produced in Germany, there should be a way of ordering them from a German seller. However, I'm unable to find one.

Maybe you can order Hukki products via http://www.dewied.com/buy_retail_casings.html Dewied International in San Antonio, Texas USA. They appear to be geared toward commercial production, however, and may not be suitable for "little guys" like you and me. (They're located close by. Maybe I need to visit, some afternoon, and "heighten their awareness.")

Another possibility: Calela's http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hukki-Sa ... 715291.uts sells them at USD $49.95 for a package of 10. These guys should be able to ship anywhere in the world. However, I need not tell you about the associated difficulties.

You might be able to order Hukki products (plus a lot of other British stuff) out of the UK via http://www.weschenfelder.co.uk/content/ ... -6065-x-10 at UKĀ£22.50 per ten.

As always, "good luck" on the shipping, taxes, etc.

More on the DeWied International Inc. operation and its sales- - they ship both domestic and overseas. They typically sell Hukki products by rolls or cut to length as specified by the customer. As an order-of-magnitude price, their "plain traditional" 40mm casing goes for $1.50 per meter, minimum order 200 meters. The price includes shipping in the USA.

The overseas sales rep was on vacation, so I couldn't talk to her, but the rep I spoke with assured me that they ship all over the world. The international price would be higher due to shipping costs and whatever import tariff you might have in your country.

...and now you know. With 200 meters, you could pack out around 150 kg of sausage, I'd guess. Hey! - - - enough to share!

P.S. This price is about 20% of what Cabela's charges. However, Cabela's ships smaller amounts.
UH OH! The "fine print" says they only ship this item within the USA. :roll:

From the Cabelas website: "Classic old-world look with deeply impressed netting. Traditionally used for summer sausage, pepperoni, salami, ham and cooked lunch meats. Each casing stuffs approximately 1 lb. Per 10".

So for about $50 you get to stuff about ten pounds! Or you could buy a couple of football fields worth of the stuff and by the time it got to Australia you'd be out a easy four to five hundred bucks. No deal!

I pretty much avoid stuffing because of the added cost. It seems to come out not too far from about a dollar per pound for ordinary casings.

I buy the little bags of 32-35mm hog casings from Cabelas or PS Seasonings that promise 25 pounds, a few times I've stuffed over 50 pounds from one pack. They usually cost me 7-8 bucks a pop and the leftovers salted in the fridge last forever. I've never been a big snack-stick fan so I can't see why I'd ever buy sheep casings for sausage. More money for less casing and harder to work with. I do have some maple breakfast sausage on my to-do list, but I'm thinking my burger press will make satisfactory patties that will cook evenly in a fry pan .Mmm, the thought of French toast slathered in butter and MacDonalds grade A maple syrup with a couple of sausage patties has me drooling like one of Pavlov's dogs. You might give them a call and see what they can do for you. I did like the samples they sent me, but unfortunately I believe their minimum purchase was like 5,000 pieces.

Perhaps they could do something for the forum members in regards to a smaller minimum purchase, I don't know. But it's worth a call. The gentleman I talked with back then was Mr. Allen McMillan (256) 362-6141.

If you do call, I'd be interested in hearing about anything they could do for the forum members.

I emailed the mill and the reply was a minimum 25 bag buy.
