Starter Cultures and Deionised water

Hi All,
Does anyone know if I can used deionised water instead of distilled water when waking up starter cultures. It’s vastly cheaper and according to what I’ve read seems like it would work and the only difference seems to be the process of purification.

The microbes need the ions in the water for proper osmotic pressure...at least that is what I have read....
